A paragon of ‘40s style and glare. Fast food heaven.
Few things are as integral a part of summer in Montreal than the Orange Julep. An iconic part of the Montreal cityscape since 1942, the massive 40 feet in diameter orange globe was built by Hermas Gibeau and was intended to house him and his family above his already successful roadside drive-in. Today the Decarie Expressway is a major freeway, and the surroundings of the restaurant have probably changed a lot since the 1940s. But "The “Julep” is still standing there serving homemade food and its very foamy and famous orange juice.
Visitors of the Orange Julep get the impression that the top 80% of the structure is a massive holding tank for the frothy orange beverage that shoots down from the ceiling of the restaurant through clear tubes, into a dispenser, and then into your cup. There’s something almost vintage sci-fi about the whole set up. The restaurant still operates as an old-fashioned drive-in, and in the summer waitresses wear short skirts and use roller blades (no longer roller skates) a hang-out that draws Montrealers from all walks of life to grab a hot dog, fries, and a frosty orange julep, beat the heat, and occupy a location that’s become a post-modern wasteland.
